Norm has been a sea kayak, saltwater fishing, wildlife and paddleboard expedition guide for the last twenty five seasons on the coast of British Columbia. Adopted into the Raven clan of the Gitga'at people, he is passionate about protecting the Great Bear Rainforest through 1% for the Planet and connecting clients to our spectacular coastline. Originally from Sudbury, Ontario, Norm now lives with his family in Royston on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

About this trip

This trip is for adventure travellers who enjoy standup paddling and snorkelling. From a paddling standpoint this trip is for intermediate paddlers who already have paddling experience and are looking to improve on those skills with instruction and guiding from Norm and his guiding team. Glover’s Reef is remote and exposed with very little protection and the area does experience a lot of wind. Our boat support will be able to shuttle us upwind so we can enjoy downwind runs along the turquoise waters of the atoll. Once we get to Tobacco Caye, closer to the mainland and located on the barrier reef we can head to the mangrove islands for protected and calm paddling but generally you need to be competent enough to deal with wind on this trip. This trip works best for you as a multi adventure experience as we will also be enjoying the incredible snorkelling and free diving at Glover’s Reef and on Tobacco Caye. The Belizean guides are masters in the underwater world and their marine ecosystem interpretive skills are superb and not to be missed. Other activities can include hand line fishing, kayak sailing the reef and of course hammock surfing! Guests seem to come away with a much richer experience after having tried all of the activities. There is something for everyone and as much as you want or as little as you want. We are excited to share the amazing country of Belize with you and the warm hospitality of the Belizean People.

Who is this trip for?

A great trip along a historic river!  6 guests, 4 guides, everything carried on our SUPs, no canoes.  Weather was perfect- high in 70s, lows in 40s (F), and no biting insects.   We even saw some phenomenal Northern Lights.  Everybody got along great and we were all very evenly matched paddlers.  I'll miss our epic card games at night!  

Yukon River Expedition

Hands down the best paddle trip I’ve been part of. Beginning to end it went off smoothly. I have nothing negative to say nor any constructive criticism. 5/5 stars.

This was hands down the best adventure trip I've ever been on. Norm and his team were top notch. We spent 5 days stand up paddling down the Yukon river and it blew my expectations away. Between the paddling, camping, wildlife, food, etc, it was everything you could ask for. Do yourself a favor and book one of these trips!

Perfect itinerary... not too hard, not too easy. Cohesive, fun group. Backpacking-style food... practical and absolutely delicious (the cooks were also on SUPs). Ideal paddle gear provided. Perfect weather was the icing on the cake. I highly recommend this trip.

I have been fortunate enough to do a great deal of adventure travel and this trip ranks up there with the best. Not only was the River and scenery spectacular but the stops at historical sites fully explained by Kalin was a big plus.  Aided by the current the paddling was perfect in the sense I ended every day pleasantly tired but not trashed.  Food was excellent too.  Quality of the gear provided (boards, paddles, life jackets, leashes) is top notch 
A highlight reel trip

Thank you to Norm for another great experience at Discovery Island lodge. I have done this trip numerous times and each time has been different based on weather, tidal currents and group goals. It is such a unique area for sea life to explore and the dynamic conditions allow for a great opportunity to practice paddling in currents and fast moving water and develop stronger paddling skills. With amazing chef prepared food, wood fire sauna & ocean cold plunges and always great people this is a trip not to be missed! 

Discovery Island Ocean Camp

Another fantastic coastal touring camp at Discovery Island lodge. Mother Nature provided a great variety of some challenging and idyllic conditions, with turquoise waters, bays, channels. A true pleasure being so close to such a variety of marine life. A great learning environment and wonderful food by Isabel. Look forward to going back! 

The Explore paddles in Comox provides an opportunity to have Coach Neil work specifically with you to fine tune your paddling skills and to give you a better understanding of efficient trip planning and reading the marine chart. As conditions changed we learned what to look for with wind swell and tidal and river current  and how the water patterns change to help identify the safest route to take. It is so beneficial to annually review and refresh all  the SUP skills before heading out on your own. There is always some new takeaway every time I am out on the water with Coach Neil. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and stoke out on the water.  See you on the next Explore paddle!

Explore Comox Paddles

Fantastic 4 days on the water circumnavigating Vargas Island, led by Norm who challenged us while making safety and education a priority at the same time. We are better at understanding the interplay of tide/currents/swell/wind/weather/route/hazards/goals for our trip planning after this rewarding educational experience, and come away with renewed motivation to continue progressing our navigation and paddle skills - and what a glorious amphitheatre to learn in!  Thanks Norm and Tina!  

Vargas Island Expedition Training Custom Group

This camp was my first with Norm and company. I’d heard wonderful things about his tours and retreats and am happy to report that my expectations were far surpassed.
The atmosphere of the camp was warm and  fun-loving yet, very informative and  the instruction was effective. 
I thoroughly enjoyed and was impressed by all the staff involved in this retreat and can see why there was  a noticeable number of repeat guests.

I’m eager to do another trip with NHE.

The Sunova Spring Surf Retreat was the perfect kickoff to my 2025 paddling season. Rancho Tofino is an amazing location, Tina had the food dialed and the coaching from Norm, Chris and Cath was a huge help. I definitely felt myself progress over the week. The yoga sessions with Jay were an added bonus. Learning about the different Sunova boards and meeting the other paddlers was fantastic as well. Can't wait to come back for another camp to keep building my skills!



I was just recently on the Sunova Surf Camp, it was an amazing experience. there was a wealth off knowledge and new friendships were forged. I greatly improved my surf paddling, and the videos made a huge difference in that learning curve. I highly recommend it if you want to learn or improve your SUP  surfing skills.

Such a great experience! Awesome surfing, great Sunova boards, superb coaching and video analysis with an outstanding group of people! Really enjoyed the delicious  healthy food and the family style preparation made it a lot of fun and a great way to get to know one another! 

This was my first time attending the Rancho Surf Camp and it did not disappoint!! Incredible atmosphere, amazing classmates, and top-notch instruction all wrapped up in a beautiful, world-class setting. I saw my skills and confidence improve dramatically and I've already put it in the calendar to come back next year. Thank you Norm, Andrew and Cath for a truly wonderful experience!

Rancho Surf Camp

Norm and Tina are hands down some of the best people I have had the privilege to meet. They are conscious, attentive, knowledgeable, compassionate, and respectful leaders through and through. They do not only settle to be expedition guides but conscious on all things environmental and personal.

After going on day paddles with Tina for the past year I wanted to advance my skills and challenge myself. Octopus island expedition absolutely provided that opportunity as we learned currents and tides and how to navigate safely on our boards. I learned lots about what gear to bring on a short multi day trip and we fortunately had great weather and saw spectacular marine life and beautiful night skies.

Its not always about the achieving the destination but about the company you are surrounded by. Thank you Tina and Norm and I cannot wait to go on another trip with NHX.

Octopus Island Tour

Had a great week of all things sup surfing including instruction, video analysis, tons of water time, amazing accommodations and food, terrific guest chemistry and cohesion, super hosts and event leaders, and very evident skills progression of everyone! Thanks! 

This was my third Rancho SUP surf trip and I’m considering going again next fall! It is a great environment for learning and the coaches are knowledgeable and supportive. The food is fantastic and the accommodation is very comfortable and relaxing. Being with like minded guests enriches the experience. Also a great spot for watching the sunset just across the road. 

This is a great SUP surf camp for experienced Stand-Up Paddleboarders that are new to surfing or for those looking to build on their current level of SUP surf skills. The dry land and on water coaching is excellent and the video feedback is helpful to see what needs to be dialed in on the next surf session. There was an incredible amount of progression with everyone from day one and the fun group was so supportive and we shared many stories and lots of laughter. The accommodations are super comfortable and the location is close to all the surf breaks. The meals provided by Chef Brandon of West Coast Salty Buns were beyond fabulous! Lots of local fare and so delicious after a long session on the water. This is a repeat trip for many of us and it is fun to reconnect on the ocean and continue building the SUP surf skills.
